- The ninth and tenth grade ELA technology standards that I feel most prepared to teach with my existing knowledge are how to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words. I am comfortable using online software that acts like a physical copy of dictionary or thesaurus online. I have made myself familiar with software like Wordsmyth and Dictionary.com and I feel like I would be able to proficiently explain how to use the resources in a classroom setting. However, I am not as familiar with the ELA standard of using "advanced searches" effectively. I personally have a bad habit of always using either Google Scholar or FSU library resources online to conduct research for my own college assignments. I am not familiar with any other advanced searching engines that are readily available on the internet, but I would like to learn more about them!
- One of the CPALMS Educator Toolkits that gained my interest was the 9-12 grade English Language Arts Rhetoric and Point of View in "The Solitude of Self". The Solitude of Self English Language Arts lesson plan takes writing from the author Elizabeth Cady Stanton to help teach lessons about feminism and independence in both life and pieces of literature. This lesson plan puts a strong focus on rhetoric and the use of logos/pathos to build a point of view in literature. I believe that it is important to teach students how to express themselves as individuals in an effective way on paper. Teaching self expression in literature to teenagers is important because it helps them to be better communicators and to empathize with the written works of other writers.
- I was really nervous to get started on the Newsletter Design assignment because I had not used Microsoft Word for anything other than writing papers for a long time. I was so scared that I had lost my skills to use Word for anything other than papers for my English classes! Thankfully, I figured out that Word has some interesting templates that make it easy to create a fun classroom newsletter without the stress! I absolutely loved the template that I used for my newsletter. However, I was not a fan of adding a newsletter heading that did not follow the template's structure. The template did not leave a whole lot of room for extra creativity and was difficult to edit at times. Next time, I would like to create an attractive classroom newsletter template just to give myself a special challenge! Prior to this assignment, I did not think about incorporating newsletters into my career but now I am considering it because it was a lot of fun.
"The Flipped Classroom" is a class that incorporates instruction outside of the classroom in addition to instruction in the classroom. This is usually done through providing assignments and instruction online to enhance learning. "The Flipped Classroom" is a nontraditional form of learning and instruction. It's beneficial to students because it keeps the learning process going no matter where they are located as long as they have access to a computer. I wish I had been given more online instructional tools when I was in grade school, I believe that "The Flipped Classroom" is every classroom's future! The digital divide is a fancy way of saying that some students have easier access to technology, such as computers/tablets, than others. The causes of digital divide vary, but it's primarily because of financial or geographical reasons. This is because some students may not be able to afford to access the technology or they may live in a rural ...
Hi Minnie!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I just wanted to say that your Newsletter is awesome! The way that it is structured along with the colors and fonts you chose make it very easy and fun to read. I have never really used any specific software to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words, so that would probably be an ELA standard that I would struggle with. Whenever I don't know something, I just type it into Google or use the Definition tool on Microsoft Word.
Hi Minnie, great blog post! The high school level English Language arts section really interested me as well since that’s what I want to teach one day! I really like the focus you put on individuality in a classroom, and teaching students to express themselves through writing and literature. I also really liked your newsletter design! I was really impressed with all of the graphics you were able to include, and how easy it was to navigate. Well done!
